Natural Treatment for Acquired Neuromyotonia
In this shloka, actions and therapeutic uses of ashwagandha are explained.
It is astringent, hot and bitter in taste. It pacifies Vata and Kapha dosha, acts as antidote, treats ulcers and acts as a spermopiotic and body tonic.

As per Ayurveda Aspect
Due to the vitiation of all the three doshas i.e., vata, pitta and kapha which imbalance the rasa dhatu, ras dhatu does not provide nourishment to the rakt as well mamsa dhatu. Due to which the muscles become weak and there is a difficulty in coordinating with voluntary movements.
As per Modern Aspect
Acquired neuromyotonia is a form of peripheral nerve related disorder in which there is hyperexcitability of this nerve that causes muscular activity which results from repetitive motor unit action potentials of peripheral organs. The main cause is known but about 100 to 200 cases have been reported.

There are Three Main Causes of Acquired Neuromyotonia
- Acquired
- Paraneoplastic: It includes a set of symptoms that are the consequences of causing cancer in the body, not due to the cancerous cells.
- Hereditary
The exact main cause is unknown but autoreactive antibodies can be detected in a variety of peripheral and central nervous system disorders. The cardinal features consist of contracture of feet and hands and myokymia. This disease affects males as well as females but is slightly more common among males and its onset is usually between the ages of 15 and 60. The acquired forms are associated with malignancies and a variety of nervous system disorders.
What are the Symptoms of Acquired Neuromyotonia?
The main symptoms generally develop between the age group of 15 and 60 and most of the people show symptoms before the age of 40. The symptoms may vary that include:
- Progressive weakness and cramping
- Stiffness
- Twitching of muscles with rippling appearance (myokymia)
- Delaying of muscle relaxation
- Muscular atrophy
- Increased perspiration or sweating
- Ataxia (difficulty in coordinating with voluntary movements)
All these symptoms generally persist throughout the day, even when the patient is under general anesthesia or during sleep. There is speech and breathing difficulty if the muscles of the throat are involved.
Smooth muscles and cardiac muscles are spared. These symptoms will vary from person to person as per the symptoms.
Modern medicine is providing anticonvulsant drugs such as carbamazepine that may stop the abnormal impulses and also prevents the symptoms related to it. But this treatment is not permanent and surgery is also done in which thymus gland is removed surgically if the thyoma is present.
