Herbal Remedies for Encephalomalacia Treatment
Abstract
A condition known as encephalomalacia causes the loss or softening of brain tissue, which can then lead to secondary injuries such as infections, craniocerebral trauma, cerebral ischemia, and cerebral infarction. Multiple cyst cavities with varying dimensions in the cerebral cortex of newborns and neonates following injury are indicated by the term multicystic encephalomalacia, also called cerebral softening. If left untreated, it can harm the tissues of the brain and influence other areas of the brain. Now, we discuss the cause, symptoms, treatment, and ayurvedic aspects of encephalomalacia.
Introduction
A severe condition of the damaged brain known as encephalomalacia causes the softening of the brain tissue. Since the brain cells cannot regenerate, the condition is incredibly difficult to treat and has no cure. Because of this, the brain is a crucial part of the human body. In the most severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged brain tissue. Any age can experience this. Sometimes encephalomalacia starts in one area of the brain and progresses to another.
Causes of Encephalomalacia
- Haemorrhage
- Stroke
- Ischemia
- Cerebral infarction
- Infection
- Abnormal collection of the blood
- Brain injury
- Craniocerebral trauma
- Scar tissue
- Surgery
Types of Encephalopathy
- Red softening
- White softening
- Yellow softening
1. Red softening
Certain softening regions of the brain are turned into red colour. A hemorrhagic infarct causes this by restoring blood flow to a section of the brain that has been previously cut off by an embolism. It is also called a red infarct.
2. White softening
Another type of cerebral softening is white softening. This kind of softening takes place where there is little or no blood flow and poor perfusion. These patches contain dead neuronal tissue and cause the cerebrum to soften. These are referred to as pale or anaemic infarcts.
3. Yellow softening
The third kind of cerebral softening is yellow softening. The afflicted softening parts of the brain appear yellow. When there has been specific brain trauma, atherosclerotic plaque has built up in the internal brain arteries, and yellow lymph has accumulated around the choroid plexus.
Symptoms of Encephalomalacia
- Extreme drowsiness
- Blindness
- Lack of concentration (ataxia)
- Severe headache
- Memory loss
- Vertigo
- Head spinning sensation
- Mood swings
- Sleep walking
- Decreased coordination
- Problems in vision
- Dizziness
- Coma
Diagnosis of Encephalomalacia
- Computerised tomography (CT scan)
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
Ayurvedic Aspect of Encephalomalacia
According to Ayurveda, the symptoms of encephalomalacia are strongly similar to those of vitiated tridosha (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). The term abhighataj refers to an injury that results from the body being wounded by a whip, wood stick, brickbat, weapon, fist, teeth, slap, or other injuries. Rakta vaha srotas dushti is produced in these circumstances, along with pain, swelling, and an unnatural colour. Because of their signs and symptoms, the vata, pitta, and kapha doshas constitute the essential cause of the beginning of all pathogenic occurrences.
