How Common Variable Immune Deficiency Can Be Cured?
Common variable immune deficiency or CVID is a rare disorder in which immunity is impaired leaving a person highly susceptible to infections from obnoxious agents like bacteria or sometimes viruses. This can lead to recurrent infections in the lungs, ear, and sinuses. In this, the immune system becomes too weak to fight against any kind of infection specifically listed above. People with CVID usually suffer from pneumonia and other respiratory tract infections. Recurrent infections can ultimately lead to chronic lung disease. Along with it sometimes the gastrointestinal system can also be involved causing symptoms like diarrhea and weight loss. There can be an accumulation of the abnormal immune cells in the spleen and lymph nodes which leads to splenomegaly and lymphadenopathy, respectively. While the collection of these abnormal immune cells in other organs lead to the formation of granulomas, i.e. lump. Just like any other autoimmune disease, it also occurs when our own body’s immune attacks healthy cells of the body mistakenly. Frequently blood cells are attacked by the body’s immunity to this disease. Thereby, people with CVID have many chances of developing disorders like immune thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, and rheumatoid arthritis. Even in rare cases, CVID patients may develop a certain type of cancers like Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Its signs and symptoms can appear at any age of an individual either, be it childhood or adulthood. Usually, CVID patients are diagnosed in their twenties or thirties age group. The genetic cause is used to differentiate various types of CVID.
The cause of this autoimmune disease is usually not exactly known. However, both environmental and genetic factors play a role in the development of this rare disorder. There are genetic mutations in the genes which have an important role in the development and functions of B cells and immunity. B cells are the type of specialized WBCs which develop and produce antibodies and specific protein that binds with any kind of harmful foreign substance and indicates the body to destroy it. But in these diseases, B cells produced are abnormal and not able to produce the proper amount of antibodies resulting in various infections in the body due to weakened immunity. This lack of immunity, in the long run, can even lead to cancer. In people affected with CVID, even the vaccination cannot help to fight infections as the body is not able to produce antibodies in any form.
It is difficult to diagnose CVID as signs and symptoms are indicative of many similar diseases. However, some tests can help to diagnose it, i.e. genetic testing.
However, Ayurveda has a different perspective than modern science. As per Ayurveda, body’s immunity is not abnormal, or it doesn’t attack the body’s healthy cells mistakenly but there is the production of ama, a toxin that is produced due to low digestive fire in the body. This ama gets stuck to different parts of the body and our immunity recognizes it as a foreign material, result in attacking it. During this attack along with ama healthy body cells to which it was attached also get destroyed. Hence, leading to an autoimmune disease. In the same way, CVID is caused. According to modern medicine, it is not treatable but only can be managed. But here also Ayurveda has a different perspective. According to Ayurveda, it can be treated by giving herbs which increase digestive fire and prevent the formation of ama. When the root cause, ama will not be there, neither immunity attack nor autoimmune disease will be there.
